SIP trunks

What is SIP trunking? SIP trunks consist of new technology that allows a business to replace its existing analogue or digital telephone lines with a data connection. It’s estimated that within the next 10 years, 9 out of 10 telephone calls will be made over the Internet worldwide.

Unlike traditional telephony, where bundles of physical wires were once delivered from the service provider to a business, SIP trunks (Session initiation protocol) allow a company to replace traditional fixed land lines with connectivity via a SIP trunking service provider on the Internet.

A business can continue to operate in the same manner as before with no changes to its telephone call handling once connected. SIP Trunk calls are carried by the traditional telephone network and by VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).

The benefits of using a SIP Trunking service

There are many benefits of using SIP trunks, the most popular being a reduction in ongoing phone costs. SIP trunks are supplied at a lower rental charge compared to other digital telephone lines or standard analogue lines, and provide telephone call savings.

By routing calls via the traditional phone network calls can be reduced particularly benefitting businesses operating across different sites where calls can be free.

Another benefit of SIP trunking is being able to operate without the constraints of geographic telephone numbers, area codes etc. The calls from any destination in the UK can be routed to you, where a data connection is available via your broadband connection.

Connecting to SIP Trunks

When making a business connection to SIP trunks, important areas need to be considered:

Is your existing business telephone system able to support the standard SIP trunking? Depending on the age of your system the answer is likely to be yes. A simple addition of a hardware module or software licence is needed. If your system is older or does not support SIP trunks, a SIP converter unit will link the newer SIP trunk data circuit and the existing business phone system trunk ports.

What is the maximum amount of simultaneous number of calls, both inbound and outbound your business telephone system processes?

Will the SIP trunking circuit that is supplied provide enough bandwidth to carry the calls required for your business? As a rough guide, one SIP trunk call will require around 32K of bandwidth.
