The advent of fibre optic lines have revolutionised broadband speeds as we know them.

Initially there was dial-up, the computer was plugged into the phone line when required. A modem handled the translation of the digital signal from the computer into the analogue format required by the phone system. The internet speed was slow and the phone line was blocked to both incoming and outgoing calls.

Improved signal with Fibre optic lines

The availability of ADSL caused things to improve. The phone line was split using a microfilter, this enabled the user to be connected to the internet whilst making telephone calls. Broadband speeds increased to around nine times faster than dial-up. Copper wires were used as standard. This however was reaching its limits. Fibre optic lines maintain the quality of connection.

Unlike ADSL, where the signal can deteriorate over distance, ie the further away from the local exchange the more inferior the quality of the connection, the newly implemented technology of fibre optic lines uses light to send its data resulting in the signal not deteriorating over distance.

Faster speeds and larger download

Fibre optic technology has advanced at a tremendous rate. The advent of fibre optic lines has not only provided improved signal and quality of lines but more importantly has provided dramatically fast data speeds and enabled users to download vast amounts of data. This technology has far from reached a plateau. There is plenty of room for development, the speed and quality will be allowed to improve in the future.
